Anglican
Church of Tanzania (ACT) Bishops’ Statement Statement
from Anglican Church of Tanzania Bishops, 10th October 2000 to “LIVING WITH
HOPE ~ ACT in Response to HIV and AIDS" Conference.
We note with concern the severity of the HIV and AIDS epidemic in Sub –
Saharan Africa, and particularly in our country, Tanzania.
Furthermore, we note with sadness the rapid growth of the epidemic in young
populations in both rural and urban areas.
We take note and commend the efforts currently being made by the Government of
the United Republic of Tanzania, in partnership with Non Government
Organizations and Religious Organizations, in a multisectoral approach within
the framework of the Medium Term Plan III of the National AIDS Control
Programme.
We recognize with appreciation the work already being done by the Anglican
Church of Tanzania.
We recognise the need to increase our response to the epidemic.
We continue to encourage the Anglican Church of Tanzania to take a more active
role in HIV and AIDS education, prevention and care.
We see the need to alter cultural and behavioural practices that increase the
risk of HIV and AIDS in our society.
We recognise the challenge to our church to involve the entire society,
especially in orphan care and medical care, social and economic support for
people living with HIV and AIDS.
We seek to advocate for the rights of vulnerable groups such as women, children,
youth and people living with HIV and AIDS.
As the Anglican Church of Tanzania, we will develop and implement our theology
of health and wholeness and demonstrate Christian love to the infected and
affected, and seek to reduce stigma, discrimination, denial and silence.
Prayer, fellowship, counselling and general pastoral care together with
scientific knowledge and good practice will be central to the HIV and AIDS
response by the Anglican Church of Tanzania.
